LATEST SHORT FILM RELESE - WATCH HERE
As my final project during university, this film was to be the most high-quality product myself and my team were to create to end our education with a bang. This 18-minute short film follows the character Mathilde on a journey as she moves to England following her passion for art. Unfortunately, her family disapprove of this decision and attempt to force her back home to run the family vineyard.
Mathilde was developed with the idea in mind that I wanted to focus on editing for narrative and intricate storytelling. To allow for a more connected experience as we see the struggles Mathilde is going through whilst finding a home in another country.
For this piece, I focused on long-lasting shots and slow digital zoom techniques. As well as other techniques such as match-on action, J-cuts and L-cuts.
I was also involved in choosing the music to be used and carefully matching the music to where was most convenient. Editing decisions were made to remove music altogether to allow for a deeper connection to Mathilde as we see her inner and outer conflicts.
Photosensitive is the product of my second year at university. After self-learning visual effects techniques, the team wanted to produce a film which utilised these to their max. Thus, the idea to create a short thriller/horror was born. Though without any major tropes involving jump-scares, the cautious editing techniques and music allow for an incredibly immersive experience.
In Photosensitive we follow a couple of young adults named Peter and Joanne. The two stumble across a random DSLR camera which seems to have been left abandoned on the side of the road. After taking the camera they soon come to realise why someone would have thrown it away after they learn it is possessed.
This edit consisted of many fast-paced techniques as well as gripping suspenseful editing.
The Hike was my first-year production at university. This was a 'testing the waters' scenario as I had begun working in a completely new team compared to my experience in college. As well as this being the longest film I had edited at the time it was also the introduction to my passion as an editor and my own stepping stones for techniques I soon learned and mastered over the year of working on this film.
The Hike follows a young man who is struggling with general life issues such as a relationship, an unfortunate situation where he was relieved from his workplace and other mental health struggles. The film follows him taking a hike whilst he reflects on these issues he is facing. Until he realises how diligent he really is and he eventually makes it to the top of the hike.
Due to this being a film I made when I was 19 and with limited equipment to use there are understandably issues with the edit and overall look of this film. However, these are nothing but reasons to reflect and improve on for the future. Personally, I can say I have definitely improved from the time creating The Hike to Mathilde.
